Introducing Child 6 Isht *
Isht is a friendly 6 year old boy who enjoys playing with his toys and
his younger brother, like all 6 year olds should. His father says that
when Isht is older he would like to become an army officer.
In this part of the world children have to take part in the day to day
survival of the family, although young Isht helps run small local errands
and helps look after his brother.
Isht is attending preschool which he walks to and is about 30 minutes
away. He meets up with his friends along the way so time passes quicker on
the way to school. Isht's favourite subjects are languages and religion.
Isht lives at home with his Father, who works as a preacher, his
mother, His grandfather who works as a driver, his grandmother and younger
3 year old brother
Isht is currently in good health and there is a local trained health
worker within 15 minutes of their home. The nearest hospital though is 2
hours away.
They live in a brick built house with a slate roof. It doesn't have
it's own toilet, so the family use the local fields or community toilet
for their personal needs. So the level of hygiene around the area is not
good.
Water is drawn from a bore hole in the back yard and is clean and
basically safe for drinking. Water is available all year round.
Cooking is done on an open wood fire which consumes vast amounts of
wood. Collecting wood is the job of women and children and takes a long
time. lighting is supplied by electricity via an official meter.
